Ghana Water Limited deviating from core mandate — NDPC chair

The Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, has criticised the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), accusing it of straying from its core mandate.

He cited inefficiency and misplaced priorities, saying the company is shifting focus away from supplying potable water to households and businesses.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV's Face to Face show on Wednesday, April 29, Dr. Thompson claimed the company is now venturing into sachet and bottled water production in competition with private firms.

He also raised concerns about rising water losses, often referred to as non-revenue water, and the company’s failure to meet its own targets.

Dr. Thompson said, “they promised… to reduce water losses from 45%… to 25%; instead, it went up to 52.2%… but nobody has been held responsible.”

He added that the company has “deviated from the core mandate of producing potable water for industry, households [and] businesses, to now producing sachet water in competition with private enterprise.”

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Ghana Water Company has cited the recent intermittent power outages as the reason for instability in water supply.
