Anti-Semitism in the UK: A Crisis Reaching Alarming Levels

Anti-Semitism in the UK: A Crisis Reaching Alarming Levels

The Numbers Second-Highest on Record
Antisemitic incidents in the United Kingdom reached their second-highest level on record in 2025, according to a report by the Community Security Trust (CST), the charity that monitors anti-Semitism and provides security for British Jews. The charity recorded 3,700 anti-Jewish hate incidents 4% higher than the 3,556 incidents logged in 2024, but below the record 4,298 incidents recorded in 2023 in the wake of the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel.

For the first time ever, CST recorded over 200 cases of anti-Jewish hate in every single calendar month in 2025. The monthly average stood at 308 incidents exactly double the monthly average of 154 incidents recorded in the year preceding the Hamas attack on Israel.

The Darkest Moment Manchester Synagogue Terror Attack
The most devastating event of the year was the terrorist attack on a place of worship on Judaism's holiest day.

On Yom Kippur morning, October 2, 2025, Heaton Park Synagogue in north Manchester was targeted in a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State. Shortly after the morning service began, a lone attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, drove at speed into the synagogue's main gate, striking and injuring a security guard. He then exited the car armed with two knives and wearing what appeared to be a suicide belt. Two congregants, Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby, were killed, and three others were seriously injured. This was the first fatal antisemitic terrorist attack in the UK since CST began recording incidents in 1984.

The attack triggered an immediate and chilling wave of hatred. In the week preceding the attack, CST recorded 64 cases of anti-Jewish hate. In the week that followed, this surged to 181 cases an increase of 183%. CST recorded 463 incidents across October alone, rising 65% from the previous month.
Greater Manchester Police stated that antisemitic hate crime tripled in the three weeks following the attack.

Cultural Flashpoints Fuelling Hatred
Beyond the terror attack, cultural events became unexpected accelerants for antisemitism.

There were 32 antisemitic incidents where the phrase "Death to the IDF" was used in explicitly anti-Jewish contexts all 32 occurring after punk-rap group Bob Vylan used the phrase on stage at the Glastonbury Festival. There were no reported examples of it being used in antisemitic incidents prior to that event.
There were also 36 antisemitic incidents linked to professional football, compared to 25 in 2024 — 14 of which were connected to West Midlands Police's decision to ban Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from attending a match against Aston Villa.

The Breakdown Types of Incidents
Incidents of damage and desecration of Jewish property rose sharply by 38% to a record 217 cases, including attacks on homes, vehicles, synagogues, schools, Jewish businesses and hostage memorials. Online anti-Semitism hit a record 1,541 incidents 42% of the annual total and 23% higher than 2024's figure, with 70% of online incidents related to events in the Middle East.

Abusive behavior including verbal harassment, hate messages and graffiti remained the most common category, making up 83% of all incidents.

The Government Responds
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper acknowledged the findings, stating that antisemitic crimes "remain shamefully and persistently high" and reaffirmed the government's commitment to tackling hate. Cooper also announced the creation of a new Anti-Semitism Working Group and reaffirmed a £54 million funding package for CST's protective work through 2027/28.

Most recently, on April 29, 2026, an independent review into anti-Semitism in schools and colleges in England, led by Sir David Bell, launched a call for evidence.

The review forms part of the government's wider commitment to strengthening social cohesion, with findings expected in Autumn 2026.

The Community's Fear
The UK government's Independent Adviser on Anti-Semitism, Lord Mann, called the figures "deeply alarming" and said they illustrate the "unrelenting" nature of anti-Semitism in the UK today, adding: "It is particularly troubling to see the number of incidents that occurred immediately after the horrific terrorist attack on Heaton Park Synagogue on Yom Kippur, celebrating the killing of British Jews on our streets."

Britain's Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis highlighted that the Manchester attack was the result of an unchecked rise in anti-Semitism, while British Christian and Muslim community leaders condemned the attack and offered prayers and support to the Jewish community.

The data paints a deeply troubling picture anti-Semitism in the UK is no longer a fringe concern but a persistent, mainstream crisis that is reshaping the daily lives, safety, and sense of belonging of British Jews.
