The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested two suspected illegal mining kingpins following a targeted operation along the Akango–Duale stretch in the Nzema East District of the Western Region.
The intelligence-led operation, carried out by the NAIMOS taskforce, focused on dismantling illegal mining activities along a third-class road linking Akango to Duale an area reportedly under increasing environmental pressure from unregulated mining.
According to officials, the taskforce moved in on a notorious mining site after receiving credible information about ongoing illegal operations. Upon arrival, operatives observed extensive environmental degradation, including large portions of land excavated dangerously close to the roadside some within an estimated 10 meters posing risks to road users and nearby communities.
The suspected miners fled the scene on sighting the taskforce, abandoning a significant cache of equipment. In line with operational protocols to prevent reuse, the team destroyed more than 40 chanfang machines and burned several water pumping hoses.
Makeshift structures and other mining materials found at the site were also demolished.
A further sweep of the area revealed a large, hazardous pit created by illegal mining activities, situated perilously close to the main road. Authorities warned that the excavation posed a serious danger to motorists and pedestrians and required urgent intervention to prevent accidents and further environmental damage.
During the operation, two individuals identified as Eric Badu and Patrick Kablerah reportedly appeared at the site and claimed ownership of the mining setup. They were immediately apprehended by the taskforce.
A Honda CR-V vehicle with registration number DV A6894, believed to have been used to support the illegal operations, was seized at the scene. Officials noted that preliminary assessments indicate the suspects’ activities contributed significantly to land degradation, pollution, and obstruction of public access routes.
The suspects have been handed over to the Essiema Police Station for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Items retrieved during the operation include two plant generators, the Honda CR-V vehicle, and an amount of GH¢14,000 in cash.
NAIMOS, in a statement, reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against illegal mining across the country. The Secretariat emphasized its ongoing collaboration with relevant stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources, protect communities, and enforce environmental laws.
The operation forms part of broader national efforts to clamp down on galamsey activities, which continue to threaten water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods in several parts of Ghana.
