Gov’t deploys buses to ease rush-hour transport struggles on Amasaman, other busy Accra corridors

The Ministry of Transport has announced an emergency deployment of buses to ease the worsening transportation challenges on some of Accra’s busiest corridors.

Commuters travelling between areas such as Amasaman, Nsawam and Kasoa have in recent weeks struggled to find vehicles during peak hours, often paying exorbitant fares or arriving home late.

The intervention, according to the Ministry, begins today, Wednesday, December 10, in collaboration with Intercity STC.

The measure will see buses stationed on four major routes during the evening rush hours with each corridor receiving a minimum of eight buses between 4:30 pm and 8:30 pm daily.

The Ministry says the move is temporary but necessary to stabilise transport access while longer-term solutions are considered.

Addressing journalists in Accra, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the deployment was designed to offer immediate relief to workers who struggle to secure transport after close of work.

“That we are going to employ some buses commencing from today, 10th December, and we will ensure that those buses are available at the peak hours to support our commuters who have closed from work to get home safely,” he said.

“We are ensuring that we mop up all those vehicles and ensure that they are on our roads… so for now, we have identified four major corridors that we are going to deploy a minimum of eight buses to each,” he added.

The minister further explained that the Ministry is collaborating with Intercity STC to utilise buses that return from long-distance trips during the day and would otherwise remain parked until the next morning.

The corridors include Accra–Madina–Adenta, Accra–Achimota–Amasaman, Accra–Malam–Kasoa and Accra–Tema–Beach Road.

The Ministry says plans are underway to scale up the number of buses if needed to ensure more commuters are supported.
