Former Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, has been named Chairman of the newly reconstituted Governing Board of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), marking a pivotal leadership shift as the agency intensifies efforts to strengthen the country’s data infrastructure.
The seven-member board was officially sworn into office on Monday, July 7, 2025, with Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Ampem Nyarko calling on members to uphold the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of official data to support evidence-based policymaking and national development.
“We count on you to maintain the highest standards in ensuring accurate, reliable, and timely data to guide national development planning and decision-making,” Nyarko stated during the inauguration ceremony.
In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Baah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for the opportunity to serve and pledged to bring visionary leadership to the Statistical Service.
“I am grateful to President Mahama and Minister Ato Forson for the confidence reposed in me,” he said. “I will work closely with the board and the management of the Statistical Service to strengthen Ghana’s data systems.”
Dr. Baah’s appointment signals a strategic pivot for the GSS, drawing on his extensive background in labour economics, policy advocacy, and institutional reform. As TUC boss, he earned a reputation for championing fair labour policies and guiding transformative national conversations around employment and equity. His blend of policy insight and leadership experience is expected to inject fresh dynamism into the GSS’s operations.
