Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid a solemn tribute to Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, during a historic visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.
Accompanied by Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Prime Minister Modi laid a wreath at the mausoleum that houses the remains of Dr. Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.
The gesture formed part of his two-day state visit to Ghana at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama.
The memorial site, a national monument designed by renowned architect Don Arthur, honors the legacy of the man who led Ghana to independence and championed Pan-African unity. Dr. Nkrumah’s visionary leadership, anti-colonial stance, and commitment to continental integration continue to resonate far beyond Ghana’s borders.
Speaking after the wreath-laying ceremony, Prime Minister Modi praised Dr. Nkrumah as a towering global figure whose ideals shaped the course of African liberation and inspired movements around the world.
“Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a visionary statesman whose thoughts and ideals guided several people,” Modi said. “He devoted himself to the well-being of the people of Ghana.”
The Prime Minister also observed a moment of silence at the tomb, reflecting on Dr. Nkrumah’s enduring contributions to freedom, unity, and social justice.
The tribute underscored the deep historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and India, reaffirming both nations’ shared values of independence, democracy, and south-south solidarity.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks the first by an Indian head of government to Ghana in 30 years and signals a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
