Protests Alone Wont Ensure Electoral Success: Expert Urges NDC to Strengthen Capacity for Vote Protection Ahead of 2024 Elections

As Ghana gears up for the pivotal 2024 elections, seasoned development consultant Tahiru Lukman, alias Prof, has issued a crucial call to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He emphasizes that the party must shift its focus from merely expressing dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission (EC) towards building a more robust framework for safeguarding their votes and refining their electoral collation systems. The stakes are high, and the time for strategic action is now.

While the NDC may have valid objections regarding the conduct of the Electoral Commission, it is essential to recognize that grievances alone will not lead to electoral success. Over the years, the EC has received increasing scrutiny for its handling of elections, particularly for its questionable remarks and decisions that many perceive as politically biased. The commission, which is meant to serve as an impartial arbiter in Ghana's electoral process, has often been accused of exacerbating tensions between political parties and undermining public trust in the electoral system.

The relationship between the EC and the various administrations since 2012 has been fraught with challenges. The current administration's approach to the EC or the later has been characterized by heightened arrogance and intolerance, which have served only to inflame already existing political disputes. Instead of fostering cooperative dialogue, these dynamics have created a more polarized environment, wherein stakeholders struggle to find common ground.

To preserve the integrity of the electoral process and foster a fair electoral environment, it is imperative that the EC facilitates meaningful dialogue with all political parties, including the NDC. Notably, calls for an audit of the voters' register have been made repeatedly; however, there has been little sign of the EC taking proactive steps to address this concern. Engaging in transparent discussions with the NDC could not only help alleviate the party's concerns but also reinforce the public's confidence in the EC as a fair and impartial body.

In light of the challenging political landscape, it is essential for the NDC to acknowledge and prepare for the odds stacked against them. Political analysts argue that for the NDC to effectively retake power, they must invest significantly in developing resilient electoral collation systems and strategies that are not only competitive but also sophisticated. The party must learn from previous electoral battles and avoid the pitfalls that led to their defeats in 2016 and 2020.

For instance, reliance on outdated practices such as using A4 sheets for result collation must be abandoned. In this digital age, political parties should leverage technology to streamline their electoral processes, ensuring that they have accurate and timely results on election night. This investment in technology is not merely an operational upgrade; it represents a commitment to transparency and accountability, making the electoral process more reliable.

Equally critical to election success is the quality of human resources involved in the electoral process. The NDC's experience in the 2020 elections raised red flags regarding the competency of polling agents. Reports indicated that individuals with basic arithmetic limitations were appointed as polling agents, leading to potential mishandling of results. This situation begs the question of the NDC's preparedness for the electoral challenge ahead.

A thorough training program should be developed to equip polling agents with the necessary skills and knowledge. The NDC must prioritize the selection of capable and knowledgeable individuals who can effectively carry out their roles, ensuring that operational inefficiencies do not mar the party's electoral efforts.

While the right to peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democratic engagement, the NDC must also leverage this moment to mobilize and energize younger constituents who will be vital to the party's electoral fortunes. Engaging the youth not only broadens the party's appeal but also brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas into its strategic planning. The NDC's agenda for redefining Ghana’s future will not come easy; hence, the active involvement of younger members will be crucial.

The party should consider initiatives that encourage youth involvement in politics, such as training programs, mentorship schemes, and opportunities for direct participation in campaign efforts. This engagement would simultaneously help in creating a more inclusive political environment while building a base of informed and motivated supporters.

As Ghana moves closer to the 2024 elections, the NDC must adapt its approach by channeling efforts into building internal capacity, enhancing dialogue with stakeholders, and investing in the future of its electoral strategies. By adopting a proactive stance that encompasses technological improvements, quality training, and youth engagement, the NDC can lay a solid foundation for a successful electoral bid. As they seek to safeguard their votes, the party must remember that resilience, preparation, and strategic focus are the keys to navigating the complexities of Ghana's evolving political landscape.
