Firefighters are battling a major blaze that has engulfed a row of shops directly opposite the Accra Central Police Station, destroying property worth tens of thousands of cedis.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that personnel from the Accra City Fire Station are on the ground working to contain the inferno. Additional support has been deployed, with three extra fire pumps drawn from the Ministries, Parliament, and Industrial Area Fire Stations to reinforce efforts to bring the situation under control.
One firefighter has sustained injuries while crews continue to battle the flames. The coordinated response is focused on preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures, including the police station.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and no casualties have been confirmed. The extent of damage to the affected shops and their contents also remains unclear as firefighting operations continue.
Emergency crews remain at the scene as efforts intensify to fully extinguish the blaze. The GNFS says significant resources have been deployed to contain the fire and avert further destruction.
Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area to allow firefighters to work without obstruction. Investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to begin after the flames are brought under control.
Details remain limited regarding the condition of the injured firefighter and any potential victims, but the GNFS has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to manage the situation.
