Ghana volleyball federation seeks greater government backing after recent successes

The Ghana Volleyball Federation (GVF) has appealed for increased government support after celebrating a series of impressive performances at regional and continental competitions.

A delegation led by GVF president George Tettey met officials at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to present the federation's recent achievements and outline its plans for the future.

The delegation included women's national team head coach Abdul Rahman Danladi, team manager ASP Bernice Timbila, as well as players and other federation officials.

The federation's recent successes include winning gold at the CAVB Zone 3 Nations Cup in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, while Ghana's youth teams also claimed medals at the Africa Youth Beach Cup in Saly, Senegal.

Ghana's beach volleyball teams added to that success by securing silver medals at the CAVB Zone 3 Beach Volleyball Nations Cup in Badagry, Nigeria, and also competed in the Road to Los Angeles 2028 Series and the World Championship qualifiers.

During the meeting, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams congratulated the federation on its achievements and said greater investment in sports could create more opportunities for young people across the country.

"When sports are properly supported, the youth of this country will flourish," he said, praising the federation for raising the profile of a sport that receives less attention than football.

Adams reiterated the government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure, pointing to President John Mahama's pledge to build 10 mini-stadia with multi-purpose facilities across Ghana. He said the project was intended to strengthen grassroots sports and improve access to training facilities nationwide.

The minister added that both President Mahama and Vice-President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang had expressed their commitment to supporting all sporting disciplines, including volleyball, through increased funding and infrastructure development.

He urged sporting bodies, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to contribute to the national sports fund, arguing that disciplines often regarded as "lesser sports" could achieve even greater success with sustained investment.

Adams also commended the Ghana Police Service for recruiting athletes into its ranks and encouraged other security agencies to adopt similar initiatives to provide career opportunities for sportsmen and women.

Speaking directly to the athletes, the minister praised their dedication and encouraged them to remain disciplined as they pursue greater success.

"You can reach whatever height you aspire to," he said. "Keep listening, stay focused, and continue to soar higher."
