Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi has dismissed claims that he does not communicate enough with his defenders, insisting that organising the backline has always been a key part of his game.

The 29-year-old was Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting the opening match against Panama before suffering an injury that forced him off in the first half. He later returned to feature again during the tournament.

Although Ati Zigi earned praise for several impressive performances, he also faced criticism from some supporters following Ghana's World Cup campaign, with questions raised about the team's defensive organisation and his vocal presence in goal.

Responding to those claims, the St. Gallen shot-stopper rejected the suggestion that he fails to communicate with his defenders, describing it as an inaccurate perception.

"Communication is a key factor in the game. I don't think it [talking to my defenders] is something I don't do. That's the narrative, but everyone has their opinion," he told Sporty FM.

He added that criticism is an unavoidable part of football but insisted it has not affected his approach on the pitch.

"Criticism is part of the game, but it doesn’t really change anything about my game. As a goalkeeper, your priority is to save goals," he added.

Ati Zigi acknowledged that fans and football analysts are entitled to their opinions but stressed that those within the national team understand the level of communication and leadership he provides throughout matches.

The Black Stars will now shift their focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with Ghana set to begin its qualification campaign in September as the team looks to secure a return to the continental tournament.
