Government mourns Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II

The government has paid glowing tribute to the late Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing him as an exceptional traditional leader whose reign brought peace, reconciliation and stability to Dagbon after years of conflict.

President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the government, also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and Ghanaians following the passing of the revered overlord.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency said it had received news of the Yaa Naa’s death with profound sadness.

“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II,” the statement said.

The government praised the late monarch for his unwavering commitment to peace, unity and social cohesion, noting that his leadership ushered in a new era of stability in Dagbon and created a conducive environment for development.

According to the Presidency, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II played a pivotal role in healing longstanding divisions within the kingdom, strengthening traditional governance and fostering productive collaboration between traditional authorities and the state.

The statement noted that his dedication to peace extended beyond Dagbon and made a significant contribution to national unity and Ghana’s broader development agenda.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his service to the nation. May his wisdom, leadership and devotion to peace continue to inspire future generations,” the statement added.

The government concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the late Yaa Naa’s soul while expressing solidarity with the Royal Family and the people of Dagbon during their period of mourning.
