The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has denied claims that public funds are being used to sponsor Ghanaian supporters for the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ministry says the narrative circulating in sections of the public is misleading and does not reflect government policy on supporter welfare and funding.

In a statement dated June 18, the ministry noted that all arrangements for supporter participation are being handled through private sector contributions and corporate partnerships.

“We want to state unequivocally that HE. President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Sports have consistently and explicitly ruled out the use of public funds to sponsor supporters,” the Ministry said.

According to the statement, the decision is informed by cost considerations and broader economic priorities.

“This stance is rooted in sound economic considerations, given the high costs estimated at up to $11,000 per fan and the need to prioritize Ghana's domestic economic development and sports-infrastructure,” it added.

The Ministry further referenced recommendations from the Justice Dzamefe Committee report and its White Paper, which discourage the use of public funds for supporter mobilization.

It explained that supporters are being sponsored through contributions from corporate Ghana through fundraising initiatives a target of about $30 million.

The Ministry further assured that transparency and accountability will guide the management of all funds raised for the tournament.
