Celebrate your WASSCE completion responsibly, lawfully — Police urge 2026 candidates

The Ghana Police Service has called on final-year senior high school students across the country to celebrate responsibly as they conclude the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Friday, June 19.

The caution comes amid concerns over rising cases of student indiscipline and violence during post-examination celebrations in some parts of the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, the law enforcement agency noted that such behaviours not only endanger lives and property but also have long-term consequences for students’ future prospects.

“As final year students across the country prepare to complete the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Friday 19th June 2026, the Ghana Police Service wishes to urge all candidates to remain disciplined, law-abiding, and to celebrate responsibly upon the conclusion of their examinations,” the statement said.

The Police reminded students that unlawful acts such as violence, vandalism, arson and assault carry serious legal consequences.

They stressed that such actions could permanently damage the future of affected students.

“The Service reminds students that acts of violence, vandalism, arson, assault, and any other unlawful conduct carry serious criminal consequences that can permanently jeopardise their futures and derail the academic careers they have worked hard to build,” it added.

The Police further cautioned that they would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute offenders involved in any form of misconduct.

The Service also cited recent incidents in the Upper East Region, where six students were arrested in connection with acts of violence at two senior high schools.

At Zebilla Senior High Technical School, two students were arrested for allegedly setting fire to a teacher’s apartment, while at Bawku Senior High School, four others were arrested for rioting, assaulting staff and destroying property.
