The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Professor Hamza Adam, has urged former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to return to Ghana and face ongoing legal proceedings against him.
Mr. Ofori-Atta and some other accused persons are facing corruption and corruption-related charges linked to actions taken during their time in office.
The former minister is currently in the United States, where he was recently granted permanent residency status.
Speaking on GTV's Breakfast Show on Thursday, June 18, Prof. Adam said the government should take the necessary steps to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta returns to account for his stewardship.
"I also believe that the government will still take some initiative to go through whatever lawful processes are available to pursue the former Finance Minister to come and account to the people," he said.
The lawmaker further called on members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to encourage the former minister to return to Ghana if he has nothing to hide.
According to him, public officials have a duty to remain accountable to citizens even after leaving office.
"I mean, for me, I will find it embarrassing that I, in my own country, of which I was given an opportunity to serve, and then I will run away from accountability," Prof. Adam stated.
He argued that appearing before the appropriate institutions would help clear any doubts surrounding the allegations and protect the reputation of the former minister, his family and his political party.
Prof. Adam expressed confidence that due process would be followed and urged Mr. Ofori-Atta to return home to address the matters before the courts.
