WASSCE 2026: Six students arrested in separate arson and rioting incidents — Police

The Ghana Police Service has arrested six students in separate incidents at Bawku Senior High School and Zebilla Senior High Technical School in the Upper East Region.

The students are candidates in the about to be completed 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

"The Service has recorded two recent incidents of student violence in the Upper East Region that resulted in the arrest of six students. At Zebilla Senior High Technical School, two students were arrested in connection with the arson of a teacher's apartment.

"At Bawku Senior High School, four students were arrested for rioting, assault on school staff, and the destruction of school and private property," the police said in a statement on Thursday, June 18.

The Service noted that acts of violence and related offences could have severe consequences on students’ future prospects.

“The Service reminds students that acts of violence, vandalism, arson, assault, and any other unlawful conduct carry serious criminal consequences that can permanently jeopardise their futures and derail the academic careers they have worked hard to build,” the statement said.

The Police have urged students, parents, guardians and school authorities to promote discipline and peaceful conduct as the examination period comes to an end.

“As final year students across the country prepare to complete the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Friday 19th June 2026, the Ghana Police Service wishes to urge all candidates to remain disciplined, law abiding, and to celebrate responsibly upon the conclusion of their examinations,” the Police said.
