
Ghanaian swimmer, Abeiku Gyekye Jackson secured a remarkable silver medal at the prestigious African Games - Accra 2023, marking a historic moment as only the second Ghanaian athlete to ascend the podium in this tournament.
Jackson's stellar performance unfolded in the gripping Men's 50m Butterfly event hosted at the Aquatic Centre of the Borteyman Sports Complex.
At the age of 24, Jackson exhibited exceptional prowess, clocking in at 24.23 seconds to clinch the silver, with the gold medal snatched by Egyptian ace Ali Khalafalla, who swiftly covered the distance in 23.93 seconds.
Meanwhile, South Africa's Jarden Eaten clinched the bronze with a commendable time of 24.42 seconds.
In a thrilling showdown, Jackson, a seasoned two-time Olympian, battled shoulder to shoulder with Khalafalla from lane five, as they pushed the limits of speed and skill. Their duel kept spectators on edge until the midpoint, where Khalafalla surged ahead, leaving Jackson in determined pursuit.
Despite the nail-biting tension, Jackson maintained unwavering focus, eagerly awaiting the race's verdict. As anticipation reached its peak, athletes anxiously awaited the monitor's confirmation of their positions.
With the final results displayed, Jackson erupted in sheer jubilation, celebrating his hard-earned silver medal in the shimmering pool waters.
However, amidst Jackson's triumph, his compatriot Harry Stacey, starting from lane one, concluded the race with a fifth-place finish, trailing behind Nigerian contender Collins Ebingha.
