Accra floods: GAF, police and other security agencies deployed for rescue missions — Interior Ministry

The Ministry of the Interior has announced the deployment of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency response agencies to assist residents affected by flooding in parts of Accra and other areas.

The deployment follows heavy rains on Monday morning, June 29, which resulted in flooding in several communities, disrupting movement and raising safety concerns.

The Ministry said the security and emergency agencies have been tasked to monitor the situation, undertake rescue operations and provide assistance to affected persons.

“The Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other emergency response services have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic, and undertake rescue operations where required,” the Ministry said in a public safety advisory.

The statement urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary movement until weather conditions improve.

According to the Ministry, people who are safely at home should remain indoors, while those at their workplaces or other safe locations should stay there until it is safe to travel.

Motorists and pedestrians have also been advised not to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges and waterways due to the dangers posed by rising floodwaters.

“As a precautionary public safety measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve. Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel,” the statement added.

Residents in flood-prone communities have further been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.

The Ministry also called on the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency personnel and rely on official channels for updates on the evolving situation.

Emergency numbers provided by the Ministry include 18555 or 112 for the Ghana Police Service, 192 for the Ghana National Fire Service and 112 for the National Disaster Management Organisation.
