Torrential Rains Flood Accra: Major Roads Submerged, Commuters Stranded in Monday Chaos

Heavy rains that began late on Sunday, June 28, and persisted into the early hours of Monday, June 29, 2026, triggered widespread flooding across Accra, submerging major roads, crippling traffic flow, and leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The prolonged downpour inundated low‑lying areas and key arterial routes, forcing vehicles to crawl through deep water while some motorists abandoned flooded sections altogether. The timing of the rains severely disrupted the Monday morning rush, with residents struggling to reach workplaces and schools amid gridlocked, waterlogged streets.

Flooding was reported along parts of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and several surrounding communities.

Homes and shops in flood‑prone neighbourhoods were also affected, with residents moving belongings to safer areas as water levels rose.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads and advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and relocate to higher ground when necessary.

Accra continues to grapple with recurring floods during heavy rains, a problem widely attributed to poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and rapid urbanisation.
