Remain where you are until conditions improve — Interior Minister advises Ghanaians amid floods

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has urged Ghanaians to remain in their current safe locations until weather conditions improve following flooding in several parts of the country.

The advisory comes after heavy rains on Monday morning caused flooding in parts of Accra and other areas, disrupting movement and raising safety concerns.

In a public safety advisory issued on June 29, the Ministry of the Interior cautioned residents and commuters against unnecessary movement as emergency services respond to the situation.

“As a precautionary public safety measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve. Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid flooded roads, bridges and waterways, warning that rising floodwaters could pose a serious danger to lives and property.

The statement indicated that the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other emergency response agencies have been deployed to assist affected persons and undertake rescue operations where necessary.

Residents living in flood-prone communities have also been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and promptly report emergencies to the appropriate authorities.

“Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges, or waterways, as floodwaters can rise rapidly and pose significant danger to life and property,” the Ministry stated.

The Interior Ministry further appealed to the public to remain calm, cooperate with security and emergency personnel and rely only on official sources for information and updates.

Emergency numbers provided by the Ministry include 18555 or 112 for the Ghana Police Service, 192 for the Ghana National Fire Service and 112 for the National Disaster Management Organisation.

The Ministry said the safety and well-being of the public remain the government's highest priority and assured citizens that it would continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as necessary.
