Word Digest: Some Attributes Of A Godly Father

As the world marks Father's Day, let us take a look at some attributes of a godly father.

Who is a father? A father is male who begets a child.

In this piece, we are going to explore the six attributes of a godly FATHER.

1. The "F" in the word FATHER represents 'Faithful'. A good father is first faithful to God, then faithful to his wife and children. A faithful father keeps his word or promise. "For Adam was formed first then Eve" 1Timothy 2:13 NIV

A father first is faithful to God, then to his family. Where he is unfaithful to God, it becomes difficult for him to be faithful to his wife and children. Are we faithful to God and the family?

2. "A" stands for 'Action'. Aside a good father being faithful, he is proactive not reactive. He is always one step ahead of the family. Fathers with this attribute are often tagged action fathers or people of action."Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruct of the Lord" Ephesians 6:4 NIV

So good fathers are action people for the right reasons. Are you an action father?

3. "T" in the word FATHER, represents 'Teacher'. Real and good fathers are teachers everywhere. Good fathers teach their wives, children and family ways that are pleasing to God. Today wives and children appreciate their fathers because of this attribute. "Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your house and on your gates" Deuteronomy 6:7-9 NIV

Are we good teachers to the family?
4. The "H" stands for hope. A father must carry hope. A good father must not only be hopeful but should have the spirit of hope. Good fathers do not demoralise their children or wives when there is a flaw. Instead they instill corrections, confidence and hope into their family in a polite manner with love. "And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us" Romans 5:5 NIV

Are we ready to signal hope into the family?
5. Moving on to the letter "E". The letter "E" stands for Example. Fathers must live a good example. Good fathers set standards for their family to follow. They live an exemplary life for their families. Nonetheless, they first look up to Christ. " Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ" 1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV

A good father emulates Christ and inculcate the principles of Christ Jesus into his family.

6. Finally the letter "R" stands for Reliable. A good father can be relied upon by his family even in tough times. "Do not lie to each other since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its creator. " Colossians 3:9-10 NIV

A father is the head figure of the family.
Be a good father to your wife, children and the generation.
