The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has cautioned that criminals are increasingly exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out more advanced cybercrimes.
According to her, while AI has become a valuable tool in strengthening cybersecurity and crime detection, it is also creating new opportunities for cybercriminals to launch sophisticated attacks.
DCOP Donkor made the remarks in a social media post on Friday, June 12, after attending the closing ceremony of the 4th ECOWAS Regional Cybersecurity Hackathon 2026.
"The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence is also reshaping cybersecurity. AI is helping defenders detect threats faster, automate investigations, and strengthen security, but it is also being exploited by criminals to launch more sophisticated scams, malware, disinformation campaigns, and cyberattacks," she said.
She further commended the participants, particularly young cybersecurity professionals from across the ECOWAS region, for demonstrating exceptional skills in tackling complex cyber threats.
The CID Director-General said their performance offered hope that West Africa is building the expertise needed to protect its digital future.
"Watching these young experts confront complex and sophisticated cyber challenges with confidence, creativity, and determination was both inspiring and reassuring.
"At a time when cyber threats are growing in scale and complexity, their performance gives hope that our region is developing the talent, skill, and courage needed to defend our digital future," she stated.
