Many Dormaa residents still prefer firewood

Dormaa -Ahenkro (B/A), June 29, GNA - Many residents of Dormaa seem to prefer firewood for the preparation of local and traditional meals instead of the Liquidfied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is promoted by government.

Although firewood remains more economical, experts have warned that there are serious health implications regarding the use of firewood, mainly due to the smoke generated during food preparation.

A market survey by the Ghana News Agency in Dormaa Ahenkro, revealed that many firewood users regard the LPG as more expensive, dangerous and harmful to use.

The increasing use of wood for fuel in the area has compelled and drawn many firewood sellers to engage in brisk business at the Tuesday Market in Dormaa Ahenkro.

The wood is usually carted from various communities including Kukorasua, Krocheremikrom, Nsuhia into the Tuesday Market in Dormaa Ahenkro by the traders.

Madam Adjoa Sembia, one of the fuel wood sellers, said she is completely unaware of such an existing government policy which promotes the use of LPG as against firewood usage.

She said she could be compelled to stop selling the wood if government decides to enforce any ban on it.

Madam Asidi Mbamaa said the fire wood is usually drawn from their farms and the business has become the main source of her livelihood.

She said government's move to ban its usage could spell disaster for them adding 'we are women with children, our husbands don't support us'.

Others called on the government to provide a suitable vocation for them so they can stop engaging in the firewood business.
