Odorgonno, July 11th, 2011: Vodafone Ghana has constructed an internet café with 100 computers and a basketball and volleyball court for the students of Odorgorno Senior High School in Awoshie, in an effort to contribute to the government's drive to provide quality education for Ghanaians. The internet café also has restrooms and a room which is knitted out for the provision of laptops. These state of the art facilities were commissioned by the Vodafone Group Chief Executive, Vittorio Colao on his two day visit to Vodafone Ghana, and Hon. Nii Ashitey Armah, the Greater Accra regional Minister.
Prior to Vodafone's benevolent intervention, the computer laboratory of the school was barely functioning. The old lab was in a poor condition with no working PCs in place. Some of the students recollected instances where there were more students than computers to use.
In addition to the internet cafe, Vodafone also constructed a basketball and volleyball court for the students.
According to Carmen Bruce-Annan, Head of Corporate Communications at Vodafone Ghana, “Vodafone believes that the internet will make the greatest contribution to the educational development of our youth. It is very important that students are exposed to this technology at this early stage regardless of the economic circumstances of the school. We are proud to use our expertise to give the students of Odorgonno Senior High School a better outlook in their educational life. We also hope the students will use the sports facilities to keep their minds fresh by keeping fit.”
Mrs. Mary Amankwa, the Headmistress of the School, was full of gratitude to Vodafone for coming to their rescue after years of being neglected. “I must say today is the day we have been anticipating for years and we thank Vodafone for coming to our rescue. Indeed Vodafone has demonstrated their belief in quality education for Ghana and we at Odorgorno promise to utilize and maintain the facilities”.
Odorgonno Senior High School was established on 25th January 1940 by two former teacher's of Accra High School, Mr. Joseph T. Leigh, a Sierra Leonean and a Ghanaian, Jerome K. Acquah all of blessed memory. The School is located at Awoshie and has a current student population of 2,857, with 1,614 male students and 1,243 females. The school offers General Arts, General Science, Visual Arts, Agricultural Science, Home Economics and Business courses.
