Cape Coast NPP in disarray over registration forms

By David Alan Painstil - Ghanaian Chronicle

The Cape Coast constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seem to be in disarray, following accusations that some of the executives have hidden the forms for the impending polling station elections from those who are interested in contesting for positions.

The Tertiary Confederacy of NPP (Tescon), led by one Roger Brown, at the weekend went to the 2008 Campaign office of the party in Cape Coast, protesting against the decision which created a scene in the Metropolis.

The constituency Secretary, Murtala Mohammed however denied the allegations that executives of the party had hidden polling station registration forms from prospective polling station executives.

Speaking to The Chronicle in Cape Coast last Saturday, Mohammed said no attempt was made by any executive member to hide the forms from anybody, saying the forms were at the party office. He revealed that some people came to the Cape Coast Constituency with different registration forms, registering people from various polling stations with the hope of rejecting the authenticated ones from the NPP headquarters in Accra.

According to Murtala Mohammed, the executives did not know Roger Brown as a member of the party, and that his Tescon membership was in doubt.

Roger Brown however insisted that he is an ardent supporter o of the NPP and a member of Tescon UCC, adding that he would not sit down for the executives to distribute registration forms to their favourites, in order to perpetuate themselves in office after letting the party down in the 2008 elections.

He said his main aim was to get rid of the executives, who he accused of squandering campaign money without rendering accounts. According to Brown, he is a native of Cape Coast and that he single-handedly hosted 1,000 party supporters after the party lost power in 2008.

He said although he was not an executive member of Tescon, he would not sit down for some few people to run the party based on their parochial interest.

On the suspicion from some executives that he was being sponsored by Ms. Christine Churcher, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast, who is seeking a national executive position, Brown admitted that he belonged to the majority of the party people, and that Churcher was part of the majority.

When asked about those who really constitute the majority in NPP, Brown said Nana Akufo Addo represents the majority, and Ms. Churcher has supported Nana Addo since 1998.
