The President of the Gambia Football Association, , has admitted that some of the Gambian players who won the African Under-17 Championship had failed age tests.
51 Gambian youngsters underwent the MRI scans in Senegal to help determine their ages ahead of the upcoming Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria.
“Very few of the players failed the test,” Kinteh insisted.
When asked if any of those who failed the test had played at the African Under-17 Championship in Algeria, Mr. Kinteh replied “Yes, but I need to check, it can't be more than 2 or 3 players.”
A squad of 28 players was earlier named for the training tour that begun in the UK last Friday.
Football's world governing body, FIFA has advised teams to prepare for random age-tests at the Under-17 World Cup tournament. Hosts Nigeria have also carried out the MRI scans on their players; but the President of the Nigerian Association, Sani Lulu said they were using the scans to help guide them in the selection of their squad ahead of next month's tournament.
