A lawyer for the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, Nana Kofi Kantanka, has presented the mission’s version of events surrounding the shooting incident involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, maintaining that the shots fired were intended as a security measure to prevent her from entering a private residence during an installation ceremony.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 21, has attracted significant public attention following reports that the former lawmaker sustained an injury to her left ear.
According to available information, Adwoa Safo had gone to the Kwabenya residence of her brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, where he was being installed as the new leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission after the passing of the mission’s founder, Kwadwo Safo.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Nana Kofi Kantanka rejected claims that the gunfire was aimed at harming the former MP.
He alleged that security personnel at the venue resorted to warning shots after Adwoa Safo reportedly attempted to gain access to the premises with her vehicle despite being advised against doing so.
“There are two gates, the northern gate and the southern gate. So they heard a loud bang at the southern gate and then people were surprised. The bang came again, and then we realised that it was a car which was banging at the gate and wanted to enter. The bang came again and they realised it was Adwoa Safo who was in the car.
“She then went to the northern gate to bang and the security apparatus told her that what she was doing would cause casualties because there were still people on the premises, because when you enter through the gate with your car, you don’t know who you can run over with a car. So they started firing warning shots to prevent her from entering the residence with her car.”
The lawyer insisted that the discharge of the firearm was intended solely to stop the vehicle from entering the compound and not to cause injury.
The account provided by Nana Kofi Kantanka reflects the position of the Kristo Asafo Mission regarding the incident. At the time of publication, neither Adwoa Safo nor the Ghana Police Service had publicly responded to the claims.
Investigations are expected to continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
