A tragic building collapse at Gyegyeano, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region, has claimed the lives of two people, while two others were rescued alive in an intensive emergency operation led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to officials, rescue efforts commenced in the early hours of the day following reports that several occupants had become trapped beneath the rubble after the structure collapsed.
The operation was spearheaded by the Cape Coast South Directors of NADMO, the Regional Rapid Response Team, and Disaster Volunteer Groups (DVGs), working alongside personnel from other emergency response agencies to search for survivors and secure the area.
The rescue team successfully pulled out two trapped victims, believed to be a couple, alive from the debris. The victims were immediately transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Ewim Polyclinic, respectively, where they are currently receiving emergency medical treatment.
However, the operation also uncovered a heartbreaking outcome as two other trapped victims were found dead beneath the collapsed structure. The deceased have been identified as the couple’s children — a 39-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl.
Emergency responders continued their efforts throughout the day to ensure no additional victims remained trapped and to assess potential risks posed by the collapse.
Authorities have appealed to residents and members of the public to stay away from the disaster scene to allow rescue personnel to carry out their work safely and effectively.
