Pokrom-Nsaba Farmers Get $38,800 Support

By Geoffrey Opoku-Darko, Pokrom-Nsabaa - newtimesonline.com

A total of 194 farmers at Pokrom-Nsabaa in the Akwapim South District of the Eastern Region have benefited from 38,800 dollar worth of farm inputs and gear to boost productivity.

The items include fertilizers, Wellington boots and nose masks.

The presentation was made after the farmers had been equipped with skills, having undergone a nine-week training in technical skills and capacity building, organised by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The commercialisation of Agriculture Project Manager for MiDA, Michael  Asomani-Adem explained that the objective of the project is to enhance the profitability of cultivation, services to agriculture and product handling in support of the expansion of commercial agriculture among Farmer-Based Organisations.

“The training was aimed at keeping the farmers to think like businessmen,” he said.

Mr Asomani-Adem said the project was also meant to support farmers to know possible buyers of their end products.

He emphasised the need for the farmers to give back some end product to the Farmer Based Organisations to sell and open  bank account or buy shares in rural banks for their future benefit.

He explained that this would help the farmers build a cordial relationship with the banks which would make them get assistance when going for loans.

Nana Toah-Djan II, chief of Pokrom-Nsabaa, commended the MiDA and government for training and providing them with important farming inputs which, he said, would go a long way to keep the youth employed in farming activities.

He called on the government to create job opportunities for people especially the youth to reduce unemployment and reduce rural-urban migration in the district.
