Alagumgube, a language and development association founded in New Jersey, United States, by indigenes of the Upper East Region, has joined workers across Ghana and beyond to celebrate this year’s May Day, while renewing its call for accelerated development in the region.

In a press statement issued to commemorate the occasion, the association highlighted its expanding footprint, noting that it now operates seven active branches across Africa. Alagumgube reaffirmed its commitment to championing socio-economic growth in the Upper East Region through advocacy and strategic partnerships.

The group pointed to some of its contributions, including its role in advocating for the establishment of a Passport Office in the region, describing it as a significant step toward improving access to essential public services.

A major priority for the association, according to the statement, is the development of an airport in the Upper East Region. Alagumgube revealed that sustained engagement with government and key stakeholders has pushed the proposed project onto the national agenda. Technical assessments have already been conducted at the proposed site, with preparatory processes underway.

“As we take part in the May Day march, we reiterate our call for the timely commissioning of the Upper East Airport,” the statement said, adding that the project is expected to boost connectivity, create employment opportunities, and drive economic growth in the region.

The association also renewed its appeal for the construction of a bypass road to reduce congestion caused by heavy-duty trucks that pass through towns in the region en route to neighbouring countries.

Alagumgube emphasised unity among its members both in the diaspora and at home, stressing that collective efforts remain key to building a stronger and more prosperous Upper East Region.
