The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed the temporary closure of all trading and commercial activities within the city's Central Business District on Saturday, July 11, to facilitate the nationwide sanitation exercise.
The directive forms part of measures to ensure the smooth implementation of the National General Cleaning Exercise declared by the government following the recent floods that affected several parts of the country.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, July 9, the Assembly outlined a series of measures to guide residents, traders, transport operators and institutions during the two-day exercise.
"All trading and commercial activities within the Central Business District on Saturday shall remain closed until the end of the clean-up exercise," a portion of the statement read.
The Assembly said public and private institutions, including shops, offices and markets, are also expected to undertake clean-up activities within their premises and surrounding areas on Friday, July 10, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., with all establishments remaining closed until the exercise ends.
It added that the metropolis-wide clean-up on Saturday will run from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and will focus on areas including Alabar, Boss FM to Otumfuo Roundabout, Asem Astroturf, Yalewa Zongo and M/A Zion School at Asafo.
"Commercial vehicle operators should take note that there will be no vehicular movement on Saturday until the end of the exercise," it noted.
The Assembly further appealed to all residents of Kumasi to actively participate in the exercise to improve sanitation and help reduce the risk of flooding.
The nationwide clean-up campaign is being coordinated under the government's post-flood mitigation measures to clear drains, remove waste and promote environmental cleanliness in flood-affected communities.
