The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has disclosed that the government paid a total of GHS107 million in allowances to Assembly Members across the country in 2025.
According to him, the payments fulfilled President John Dramani Mahama's campaign promise to provide modest allowances to Assembly Members to support their work at the local level.
Speaking during his appearance at the Assurance Committee of Parliament on Thursday, July 9, the Minister explained that the country has a total of 9,090 Assembly Members, comprising elected and appointed members, with each receiving GHS1,300 as part of the allowance package.
"By December 31, 2025, the President has paid 107 million Ghana cedis to all the Assembly Members in the country... We have 6,272 elected Assembly Members and 2,818 appointed Assembly Members," he stated.
He said the funds were transferred directly to the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for disbursement immediately after they were released by the Ministry of Finance.
"The one for 2026, the first quarter was released this week, and as at yesterday, I gave an order to the Financial Controller. Once it has come, send it to the Assembly Members. So we are on track when it comes to the payment of allowances for Assembly Members," said the minister.
Mr. Ibrahim noted that the only challenge encountered during the implementation was concerns raised by some Assembly Members over the deduction of taxes from the allowances.
