Accra Floods Paralyse Major Roads as Authorities Urge Commuters to Exercise Caution

Heavy overnight and early morning rains have caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra, leaving several major roads impassable, disrupting the Monday morning commute, and prompting emergency warnings from authorities.

Traffic congestion has built up across key transport corridors as floodwaters submerged sections of highways, stranded vehicles, and forced many commuters to seek alternative routes. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has activated emergency response teams while residents in flood-prone communities have been advised to remain vigilant.

Major Roads Affected
Reports from motorists, residents, and local media indicate that several critical routes have been severely affected:

Weija–Kasoa Road: Floodwaters have rendered sections of the road impassable, disrupting traffic between Kasoa and Accra.

N1 Highway: Portions of the highway, particularly around Weija Barrier and Mallam, have been inundated, causing long traffic queues.

Fiesta Royale Area: Roads in the vicinity have been submerged, making movement difficult.

Ghana Standards Authority–Shiashie Stretch: Flooding has reduced traffic to a single lane, slowing movement significantly.

Atomic Roundabout: Waterlogged roads have restricted vehicle access.

Legon–GIMPA Bypass: Flooding near the Ghana School of Law has blocked sections of the road.

Alajo: Low-lying homes and businesses have been inundated as drains overflow.

Flooding has also been reported in parts of Spintex Road, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and around the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, where motorists experienced severe delays.

Authorities Urge Caution
Emergency management officials are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay away from flooded roads and drains.

Motorists have been urged not to drive through floodwaters, as even shallow water can conceal damaged roads, open drains, or stalled vehicles. Pedestrians have also been cautioned against wading through moving water due to the risk of drowning, electrocution, and waterborne diseases.

A widely shared public advisory encouraged commuters who had not yet left home to "hasten slowly"—a reminder to prioritise safety over speed while monitoring road conditions before travelling.

Rain Expected to Continue
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast intermittent rainfall throughout the day, raising concerns that water levels could rise further in low-lying communities.

NADMO says emergency teams remain on standby across the Greater Accra Region to respond to flooding incidents and assist affected residents where necessary.

A Recurring Urban Challenge
Monday's floods once again highlight Accra's long-standing challenges with inadequate drainage, rapid urbanisation, poor waste disposal, and construction on waterways. Heavy rainfall frequently overwhelms drainage systems, causing flash floods that disrupt transport, damage property, and threaten lives.

Urban planning experts have repeatedly called for sustained investment in drainage infrastructure, stricter enforcement against illegal developments on waterways, and improved waste management to reduce flooding during the rainy season.
