The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has described recent comments by former presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as falling within the party’s definition of anti-party behaviour.
His comments follow Mr. Agyapong’s renewed criticism of the NPP over the non-operationalisation of the Afari Military Hospital during its time in office, as well as his warning that he could “spill the beans” on alleged wrongdoing within the party if pushed further.
The remarks have triggered internal debate and petitions calling for disciplinary action against him.
Mr. Ahiagbah referenced Article 3 of the NPP Constitution, which he said requires all members to act in ways that protect and promote the party’s image.
“On the matter of whether his behaviour is anti-party or not, we have a constitution, and the constitution in Article 3 sets a clear standard for all members, that as a member your actions and inactions must promote and defend the good name of the party,” he said on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, June 20.
He argued that Mr. Agyapong’s conduct in the current controversy does not meet that standard.
“In the conduct that he’s put up in this matter, it is a conduct that is tantamount to not defending the good name of the party,” he stated, adding, “I can still tell you in confirming your claim that that is an anti-party behaviour.”
Mr. Ahiagbah, however, noted that he was not the authority responsible for determining sanctions, explaining that any disciplinary action would have to be handled by the appropriate party structures in line with due process.
He added that possible sanctions for anti-party conduct could range from warnings to expulsion, depending on the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
He further suggested that Mr. Agyapong’s insistence on his comments indicates they were made deliberately, and maintained that any petitions filed against him should be handled through the party’s established mechanisms.
According to him, no member of the party is above its rules and disciplinary processes.
