GMet issues severe weather alert for Northern Ghana as heavy rainstorm approaches

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an urgent weather warning for several parts of northern Ghana as a moderate to heavy rainstorm accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds moves across the area.

In an alert released on Saturday, June 20, GMet said the storm system had already entered the country and was generating significant cloud cover over the Upper East, North East and Northern regions.

The agency indicated that the weather system is expected to trigger thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensity as it continues moving westward. Areas likely to be affected later in the day include the Savannah Region, parts of Bono East, Oti and the Upper West Region.

GMet classified the weather event as severe and warned that thunderstorms could be accompanied by moderate to strong winds, increasing the risk of damage and disruption in affected communities.

Residents, particularly those living in flood-prone and low-lying areas, have been advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures against possible flash flooding.

The agency also urged motorists and pedestrians to avoid crossing flooded roads and waterways, warning that fast moving floodwaters can pose serious dangers. Members of the public have additionally been advised not to seek shelter under weak structures during the storm.

“Stay indoors if you don't need to go outside,” the agency advised, while urging drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed due to poor visibility and slippery road conditions.

The warning is expected to remain in force until 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and covers the Upper East, North East, Northern, Savannah and Upper West regions.

GMet's Central Analysis and Forecasting Office said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions and will issue further updates when necessary.
