Police crack suspected robbery network in Ashanti South, two suspects killed in alleged gun battle

The Ashanti South Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has disrupted a suspected armed robbery syndicate following a two-day intelligence-led operation that resulted in the arrest of an alleged gang leader and the deaths of two other suspects during an exchange of gunfire.

According to a statement issued by the Regional Police Headquarters in Bekwai, the operations were conducted on June 16 and 17, 2026, as part of efforts to combat a string of vehicle thefts and violent robberies reported in Anwiankwanta, Ahwia and parts of Kumasi.

The first operation led to the arrest of William Opoku, popularly known as “Father Blessing,” at Ahwia near Kumasi. Police said the suspect attempted to flee when officers moved in but was apprehended.

Investigators allege that during interrogation, Opoku admitted involvement in several vehicle theft and robbery cases, including the stealing of a police officer’s Toyota Corolla at Pankrono, another vehicle at Anloga Junction, and a robbery attack on a police inspector at Kronum Brokutu in July 2025 during which an AK-47 rifle and ammunition were taken.

Police said the suspect also identified several alleged accomplices, including Prince, also known as “Killer Wooah,” Sulley alias “Shangu Spirit,” Bonkro alias “Okoronko,” Aki and Yaw Antwi. He reportedly told investigators that some stolen vehicles and the stolen rifle were in the possession of Sulley.

Acting on the information, police launched a follow-up operation on June 17 to arrest additional suspects. Officers moved to apprehend Sulley, Bonkro and another suspect known as “Long Story.”

According to the police, the suspects attempted to escape on a motorbike during the operation and allegedly knocked down an officer before opening fire. This led to an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the police.

Two of the suspects, identified as Sulley and Long Story, sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Another suspect reportedly escaped and remains on the run.

Police investigations have also linked the group to other vehicle theft incidents, including a robbery case at Moro Market in Kumasi.

The Ashanti South Regional Command said efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects and recover stolen vehicles, firearms and other items connected to the investigations.

The police have warned criminal elements operating within the region to desist from unlawful activities, stressing their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
