NALAG launches nationwide exercise book distribution initiative to support basic education

The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has launched a nationwide exercise book distribution initiative to support basic education and improve learning outcomes among primary school pupils nationwide.

The initiative, dubbed “Local Governance for Educational Transformation,” was launched in Accra on Wednesday and seeks to provide exercise books to primary school pupils in all 16 regions of Ghana.

Launching the programme, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Madam Rita Odoley Sowah, commended NALAG for the intervention, describing it as a practical demonstration of collective commitment to ensuring that no child is denied quality education due to a lack of basic learning materials.

She noted that despite the government’s significant investments over the years in expanding access to education and improving infrastructure and learning outcomes, some children still face challenges in obtaining essential educational materials.

“In many communities, the inability to afford basic educational materials continues to hinder learning and negatively affect academic performance. For this reason, initiatives such as the NALAG Exercise Book Distribution Initiative are not only relevant but profoundly impactful,” she stated.

Madam Sowah further highlighted the importance of the initiative’s theme, stressing that local governments are strategically positioned to understand the needs of their communities, mobilise resources and build partnerships that can transform lives through education.

She encouraged beneficiary pupils to make good use of the exercise books and remain committed to their studies.

“The future of Ghana rests in your hands. Study diligently, dream boldly and work hard,” she advised.

The President of NALAG, Mr Alfred Asiedu Adjei, said the launch represented more than the distribution of exercise books, describing it as an investment in the future of the nation.

“We are not simply unveiling exercise books; we are unveiling opportunity, restoring hope and investing in the future of our nation,” he said.

Mr Asiedu Adjei explained that the programme marks a historic milestone for the Association, as it is the first nationwide corporate social responsibility initiative undertaken by NALAG in its nearly 50-year history.

According to him, the initiative reflects a shift in local governance from administrative functions to active investment in human development and community transformation.

He disclosed that more than 300,000 branded exercise books would be distributed to pupils across the 16 regions, supporting teaching and learning and inspiring hope among the country’s future leaders.

Mr Asiedu Adjei also called on corporate organisations and development partners to collaborate with NALAG to expand educational interventions and promote inclusive local development across the country.
