Residents of Samreboi in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region are counting their losses after a heavy downpour triggered severe flooding across sections of the town, leaving roads, homes, and other low-lying areas submerged.
Drone footage from the affected area captured the scale of the disaster, showing vast stretches of floodwater engulfing parts of the community and disrupting normal activities. Several roads became impassable as water levels rose rapidly following the rainfall.
The flooding has renewed concerns about the environmental impact of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in Samreboi and surrounding communities. The area has for years battled the consequences of unregulated mining activities, which many residents and environmental advocates believe have contributed to the degradation of natural waterways and the destruction of vegetation that once helped control water flow.
Experts have often warned that silted rivers, blocked drainage channels, and disturbed landscapes caused by illegal mining can increase the risk of flooding during periods of intense rainfall. The latest incident has once again brought these concerns to the forefront as residents question whether environmental damage may have worsened the situation.
Although no casualties have been reported so far, the flooding has affected daily life in the community, with some households forced to deal with water entering their homes and properties. Residents are calling on authorities to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to affected families.
