Ghana reaffirms free education commitment as Ghana, The Gambia deepen education ties

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has said the government is committed to providing free education from kindergarten to tertiary level.

He said this when he received a delegation from The Gambia, led by the Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Habibatou Drammeh, to learn from the country's experiences in education governance, workforce management, digital transformation, accountability systems, and evidence-based policymaking.

He explained the roles of the Ministry of Education (Ghana) and the Ghana Education Service in managing the sector during a high-level engagement with a visiting delegation from The Gambia.

Mr. Iddrisu highlighted Ghana’s governance structure for education and reaffirmed efforts to expand access while improving quality across all levels.

He explained that strengthening basic education remains central to improving learning outcomes across the system.

He also noted ongoing curriculum reforms aimed at aligning classroom content with emerging global needs, including artificial intelligence, coding, robotics, financial literacy, and collaborative learning.

The Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Habibatou Drammeh, indicated that The Gambia is pursuing reforms under a World Bank-supported programme and sees Ghana’s experience as relevant to its reform agenda.

Officials from the Ghana Education Service presented Ghana’s School Report Card system and digital monitoring tools used to track attendance, infrastructure conditions, teacher presence, and student performance. The Gambian delegation described these tools as useful for improving accountability and informing policy decisions.
