Dr Williams Koku Awoonor, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health, has called on the Government to prioritise the rehabilitation and re-equipping of the Nkwanta South Government Hospital to enable it meet international standards of healthcare delivery.
He said the hospital, which serves residents of Nkwanta South and neighbouring districts, faced infrastructure and equipment challenges that constrained efficient service delivery and quality patient care.
Dr Awoonor made the call during a medical outreach programme in the municipality, where specialist doctors and surgeons were providing free medical services to residents.
He noted that the facility required urgent retooling, including the provision of modern theatre equipment, X-ray machines and other diagnostic tools, to reduce referrals and improve treatment outcomes.
“The hospital serves not only Nkwanta South but also surrounding districts and communities across the border in Togo. Given its strategic importance, investment in infrastructure and equipment is essential to improving healthcare delivery,” he added.
Dr Awoonor previously worked at the then Nkwanta Clinic and played a role in its transitioning into a hospital.
He stressed that upgrading the hospital would enhance access to quality healthcare, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the facility's capacity to respond to the growing healthcare needs of the population.
As part of the outreach programme, which began on June 15, more than 300 residents with various medical conditions had been screened for surgeries and specialised treatment.
Dr Awoonor said all services under the outreach programme were being provided free of charge and urged beneficiaries to present their National Health Insurance Scheme cards to access care.
He cautioned the public against making any payments for services under the programme and encouraged residents to take advantage of the opportunity to seek medical attention.
The Technical Advisor reiterated his appeal for urgent government intervention to modernise the hospital, saying the move would significantly improve healthcare outcomes and align the facility with internationally accepted standards of patient care.
