The National Identification Authority (NIA) will from Tuesday, May 5, resume the registration of Ghana Cards for children aged between 6 and 14 in the Volta and Oti Regions.
The exercise, which will be carried out in phases, is expected to last 21 days in the two regions as part of a broader nationwide rollout targeting about 3.1 million children.
In a statement issued on Monday, May 4, and signed by Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the Authority said the exercise is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s identity system from an early age.
“The exercise forms part of a nationwide effort to register approximately 3.1 million children, aimed at deepening inclusion and strengthening Ghana's national identity system from an early age,” the statement read in part.
According to the NIA, registration teams will move from school to school, covering both public and private institutions to ensure wide coverage.
It added that registration will take place daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while children who are not in school can visit designated centres within their communities to be registered.
“To register a child, a parent or guardian must present the child's original Birth Certificate, a valid Ghanaian passport, or a Certificate of Acquired Citizenship,” the statement noted.
The Authority further explained that where these documents are unavailable, an Oath of Identity form may be completed by a parent, relative, or legal guardian.
In cases where children have no known relatives, two Social Welfare Officers may vouch for them under oath.
The NIA also encouraged parents and guardians to present their children’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards or numbers during registration.
It stressed that all adults presenting children must be Ghanaians, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid Ghana Card.
