2026 BECE Takes Off: 619,985 Candidates Begin a Journey to SHS

Ghana's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) has kicked off today, Monday, May 4, 2026, with a record-breaking number of candidates sitting the high-stakes exam that serves as the gateway to Senior High School education across the country.

The Numbers
A total of 619,985 candidates from 20,390 schools across the country are sitting the 2026 BECE, with an additional 156 candidates from neighboring Togo and Benin also participating. This represents a significant year-on-year rise from the 603,328 candidates who sat the 2025 edition, underscoring the steady growth in Ghana's basic school enrolment.

The combined figure marks a new high-water mark in the history of the examination, reflecting both population growth and the sustained impact of Ghana's Free Senior High School policy in making secondary education more accessible.

A Pivotal Cohort
This year's candidates carry special significance. Every one of the 619,985 Ghanaian students who successfully complete the examination is in line to benefit from the government's Free Senior High School (FSHS) programme meaning the results of this examination will determine the SHS placements for the 2026–2027 academic year.

A Reformed Placement System
The 2026 BECE cohort will also experience a major change to how school selection works. Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu announced that BECE candidates will now select their preferred Senior High Schools only after the release of results, as part of efforts to improve the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) and ensure students make more informed choices.

Students will have a one-week period to pick their schools once their results are out. The old system, where students had to choose schools before knowing their grades, often led to poor placement results. "In the past, students selected schools without knowing their aggregate, and that affected the placement system. This time, we will provide a mandatory period of one week after results are declared for students to confirm their choices based on their performance," the Minister said.

The government intends to build a placement system that rewards hard work, treats students fairly regardless of where they come from, and gives every Ghanaian child a genuine shot at quality secondary education.

Regional Representation and the WAEC Framework

The BECE is both a certification examination and a selection tool for entry into Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes in Ghana. Results are based on Continuous Assessment, which forms 30% of the total, and the external examination, which accounts for 70%.

The presence of 156 candidates from Togo and Benin further highlights the cross-border reach and regional credibility of the WAEC-administered examination, which has long served as a shared academic benchmark across West Africa.

Looking Ahead
With over 619,000 young Ghanaians now putting pen to paper, the 2026 BECE is one of the most consequential examinations in the country's educational calendar. The results, expected later in the year, will shape the academic futures of an entire generation and with the new post-results school selection system in place, candidates and parents alike can look forward to a fairer, more transparent path to Senior High School in the 2026–2027 academic years.
