A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has criticised his party for failing to discipline its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, over inflammatory remarks.
He said the party’s silence allowed the situation to escalate, compromising the NPP’s long-held values of dignity and respect.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, September 30, Dr. Boakye-Danquah said the leadership should have “cracked the whip” earlier.
“I would have wished that my political party should have drawn him to order. If my political party had cracked the whip very early, I’m not sure we would have gotten to this state,” he stated.
According to him, the NPP prides itself on being a party of “values, respect and intellectuals” and should not tolerate conduct that undermines its ethos.
He also expressed concern about how the police handled the case, describing the use of a Black Maria vehicle to transport Abronye as excessive.
Abronye DC was arrested on Monday, September 8, and charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace and publication of false news.
This followed alleged derogatory comments he made against the Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
He has since been remanded into custody twice by the Accra Circuit Court and is expected to reappear on September 19.
