Krobea Kwabena Asante, an Aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the suspension of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency, Christopher Arthur.
According to Krobea Asante, the suspension was arbitrary and lacked broad-based consultation within the party’s hierarchy.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, July 15, he argued that the constituency chairman and secretary who issued the suspension should themselves face sanctions for their actions.
“The Agona West Chairman and Secretary need to be suspended by the party for that arbitrariness. How can the two suspend Chris Arthur without referring him to the Constituency DC? And also when other constituency executives were not aware?
“Where is natural justice? We pray the regional and national executives set aside this suspension. If you have a personal fight with the young man, kindly fight him outside politics,” Krobea Asante wrote.
The suspension of Chris Arthur, announced in a letter dated July 14, took immediate effect.
According to the letter, signed by the Constituency Secretary, Anthony Kwame Kum, and Chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, Mr. Arthur organised an electoral area meeting on Sunday, July 6, in defiance of a party directive prohibiting premature campaigning.
The directive, issued by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on May 14, cautioned against any form of political activity until nominations are officially opened.
The party explained the measure was necessary to protect internal cohesion and maintain strategic focus ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The constituency executives noted that Mr. Arthur’s action not only violated the directive but also undermined the authority of the party’s leadership and structures.
