President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The appointment, effective January 21, 2025, was made in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791). It is pending the constitutionally required advice from the governing Board of the GRA, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
The announcement, communicated in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, congratulated Mr. Sarpong on his appointment and extended the President’s best wishes. The letter also requested that Mr. Sarpong formally indicate his acceptance of the appointment within 14 days of receipt.
Anthony Kwasi Sarpong steps into the role at a critical juncture for Ghana’s revenue mobilization efforts. His leadership will be pivotal in strengthening the GRA's capacity to meet revenue targets, combat tax evasion, and enhance tax compliance to support the government’s development agenda.
The GRA, as Ghana’s primary tax authority, plays a vital role in generating the revenue necessary to fund key government programs and services. Mr. Sarpong’s extensive experience and expertise are expected to bolster the institution’s efficiency and effectiveness in meeting these objectives.
As he assumes office, stakeholders and the public alike will be keenly watching for strategies and reforms aimed at addressing the challenges facing Ghana’s tax system, including expanding the tax base, improving digital tax systems, and ensuring transparency in revenue collection.
Further details on Mr. Sarpong’s vision and priorities for the GRA are anticipated in the coming weeks.
