The Accra-Winneba highway has been disrupted following the diversion of the Ayensu River by a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway.
This diversion has led to severe flooding and the formation of a large gulley across the road, stranding commuters and causing major traffic disruptions.
The powerful floodwaters, redirected by the construction work, have wreaked havoc on the main highway.
The damage has led to significant frustration among commuters, who are now urgently calling for repairs and demanding accountability from the contractor responsible for the diversion.
The chaos has had a profound effect on daily travel, highlighting the need for immediate remedial action.
In addition to the road damage, the diversion has caused flooding in over 150 homes in Gomoa Mampong, compounding the distress for local residents.
A bridge spanning the Ayensu River, which originates in the Eastern Region and crosses the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District, has been particularly affected by the floodwaters.
Robert Hackman, the Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has advised commuters to use alternative routes at Winneba while efforts to restore the highway are underway.
The situation underscores the urgency of the repairs needed to restore normalcy to this vital roadway.
