The General Secretary of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey has described tribalism allegations levelled against him by some people he said are from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a sign of desperation.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 19, Mr. Kwetey dismissed "misleading" and "inaccurate" claims in a viral video that portrayed some of his past comments as promoting division between Ashantis and Ewes.

"The NPP's adoption of divisive strategies involving religion and tribal politics reflects a sense of desperation. Their reliance on deception and distortion suggests a belief that these tactics are the only means to cling to power,” read part of his statement.

The NDC chief scribe said the video circulated by the NPP was framed to portray his actual comments made during an NDC retreat last year in a negative light.

According to Mr. Kwetey, "during a retreat in January 2023, I emphasized to the people of the Volta region the significance of the NDC, urging them to perceive it not merely as a political party but as a unifying force, akin to a religion."

He maintained that his reference to the NPP's support base in the Ashanti region was simply to illustrate the loyalty some parties command, similar to dynamics in the US.

The General Secretary accused the NPP of resorting to "base and vile efforts" which include exploiting religious and ethnic divisions out of desperation ahead of the 2024 polls.

He urged Ghanaians to see through such tactics and treat the "misleading" allegations levelled against him with the "disdain they deserve."
