Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, popularly known as Dr Likee, has reflected on his dramatic transition from Kumawood “bad boy” actor to a leading figure in Ghana’s digital comedy space, saying his new direction was initially dismissed by critics as “madness.”
Speaking on 3MusicTV, he revealed that even years into his career, some people still question his mental stability due to his shift in creative style.
Once typecast in Kumawood films as a gangster and tough character, Dr Likee said his move into skit-making and online content creation was met with confusion and ridicule, especially when he began wearing unconventional costumes and adopting exaggerated comedic roles on YouTube.
He noted that audiences who were used to his serious on-screen persona struggled at first to understand the transformation.
Despite the criticism, his persistence paid off between 2020 and 2022, when a series of viral skits propelled him into national prominence, effectively eclipsing his earlier film career.
In 2022, he was named Comic Actor of the Year at the Entertainment Achievement Awards, a recognition he described as validation of his creative direction.
Dr Likee is now also credited with mentoring more than 80 young talents, including Kyekyeku and Opoku Bilson, helping to shape what many describe as a new wave in Ghana’s digital comedy industry.
