The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing him as a traditional ruler whose leadership strengthened peace, unity and national development.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 14, and signed by the party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP extended its condolences to the chiefs and people of Dagbon, as well as the entire nation, following the passing of the revered monarch.

The party said the late Yaa Naa's reign was defined by wisdom, humility and an unwavering commitment to reconciliation.

The opposition party added that the late King's contribution to the consolidation of peace in Dagbon and the promotion of development would remain one of his enduring legacies.

"His Majesty's reign was marked by wisdom, humility, and an unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and development. His exemplary leadership helped consolidate reconciliation in Dagbon and strengthened the institution of chieftaincy as a vital partner in Ghana's democratic governance and national development," the statement read in part.

According to the NPP, the late overlord maintained constructive relations with successive governments and consistently supported initiatives aimed at improving the socio-economic wellbeing of the people of Dagbon.

The party noted that his advocacy for education, infrastructure, peaceful coexistence and development had left a lasting impact on the kingdom and the country.

"As we mourn this great loss, we pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, grants him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and comforts the Chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians during this difficult time," the party noted.

The NPP said although the country had lost an eminent traditional ruler, the values he embodied and the peace he helped entrench in Dagbon would continue to inspire future generations.

It also offered its sympathies to the bereaved family, the Dagbon Traditional Council and all Ghanaians, praying for the repose of the late Yaa Naa's soul.
