CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, according to Spanish media outlets.
Tenerife and Andorra were nearing the end of their LaLiga 2 match on Monday afternoon.
Both sides had already had a player sent off, and the score was 2-2 when a high ball sent De Miguel through in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came out to meet it.
Around the halfway line, Owono could not use his hands. He tried to kick the ball away but struck the 30-year-old De Miguel hard in the head.
Medics treated De Miguel for several minutes, then carried him off on a stretcher and took him to hospital. Spanish media also reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest before resuscitation restored his heartbeat.
Although De Miguel’s condition appeared to stabilise on Monday evening, Tenerife reported on Tuesday morning that it had deteriorated. The Spanish striker died shortly afterwards as a result of the foul.
