The Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) has introduced a 1:4:4 shift system at its new production line to support round-the-clock operations and create more stable job opportunities.
The system forms part of the company's efforts to expand production following the commercial operation of its first value-addition production line at the Tema smelter.
VALCO Chief Executive Officer, Dr Robert Makila Sambian, announced this on Tuesday, November 3, during the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources' Progress Series.
The shift arrangement assigns four workers to each operational role across four rotating shifts to ensure continuous production while reducing fatigue and improving worker safety.
Dr Sambian said the system is necessary to sustain the continuous casting process at the company's new Continuous Casting and Rolling (CCR) Electrical Grade Rod Mill.
“The 1:4:4 shift system is a vital operational model for the CCR plant. Running a 24-hour continuous casting process requires absolute consistency, and assigning four dedicated personnel to every role across four rotating shifts allows us to maintain non-stop production while prioritising worker safety, mitigating fatigue, and directly expanding stable job opportunities for our workforce,” he said.
The CCR rod mill allows VALCO to process primary liquid aluminium into high-grade electrical rods for local manufacturers and international markets.
Dr Sambian said the company is already supplying the products to Ghana's power and construction sectors while fulfilling orders for European markets.
He said the development would strengthen Ghana's foreign exchange earnings and increase the country's participation in the global aluminium value chain.
VALCO's workforce increased from 785 employees in December 2025 to 848 by October 2026, following the introduction of the new production line and other retooling efforts.
Management expects the workforce to reach 1,500 when all five potlines are fully restored and downstream manufacturing activities expand.
The company also projects that the expansion will support more than 6,000 indirect jobs nationwide.
